"Jefferson's Pillow" comprises five linked essays in which Wilkins measures his
country's history of slavery and racial discrimination against its ardent
self-promotion as "the land of the free." He examines this paradox through the
prism of personal experience, at the same time presenting thumbnail sketches of
four Virginians who played pivotal roles in the creation and organization of the
United States: George Washington, George Mason, Thomas Jefferson and James
Madison. (He takes his title from Jefferson's earliest memory, that of being
carried on a pillow by a slave riding on horseback.)
