Lonny where are you planning to publish this work?  Or submit it?  The easiest way to decide would be to contact a press or journal and ask what style they use; or to choose a favorite recent article or book, and just follow the style in that.  The standard for history and many other fields in Chicago Manual of Style, first created by Kate Turabian.

UVA Press; Harvard Press, Princeton Press, etc. would all give you a good model to follow.
