The Museum of the Confederacy's 2001 Lecture Series entitled "The Debate
Over Black Confederates Then & Now," co-sponsored by the Library of
Virginia, will consist of three free public programs, all held in the
Lecture Hall adjacent ot the lobby of the Library of Virginia at 800 East
Broad Street in downtown Richmond.

On Saturday, 3 March 2001, at 8:00 P.M., Dr. Craig L. Symonds, U. S. Naval
Academy, author of Stonewall of the West: Patrick Cleburne and the Civil War
will discuss "'A Plan Which We Believe Will Save Our Nation': Patrick
Cleburne and the Arming of the Slaves in the Confederacy."

On Wednesday, 14 March 2001, at 5:30 P.M., Dr. Robert F. Durden, Duke
University, author of the prize-winning The Gray and the Black: The
Confederate Debate on Emancipation, will deliver a lecture with the same
title.

On Wednesday, 28 March 2001, at 5:30 P.M., the program will consist of a
panel discussion featuring Dr. Edward C. Smith, director of the Civil War
Institute, American University, and author of "Calico, Black and Gray: Women
and Blacks in the Confederacy"; Professor Ervin L. Jordan Jr., University of
Virginia, and author of Black Confederates and Afro-Yankees in Civil War
Virginia; and Dr. Arthur W. Bergeron Jr., Pamplin Historical Park, author of
"Louisiana's Free Men of Color in Gray" and Guide to Louisiana Military
Units, 1861-1865.

Admission to the the lectures is free, but reservations are required. For
