Thanks. Please delete the present message unless you plan to submit
comments to officials, as my original message requested.
It turns out that the first e-address that I cited when I wrote on
Sunday afternoon, [log in to unmask] in Richmond, is now
sending bounce-backs. The other main address, [log in to unmask] at the
National Park Service, is still valid and important. Sorry for the hassle.
It appears that Ms. Suit, who directly represents the governor
concerning Fort Monroe, and who chairs the Fort Monroe Authority,
plugged an auto-response into her e-mail account just on Sunday
afternoon. I've corresponded with her often in the past, and in fact
have sent her several things in recent days. But the bounce-back message
began appearing after Sunday's mailing effort had progressed a certain
distance. Maybe Ms. Suit doesn't want to hear from people. In fairness,
she likely gets way too much e-mail anyway.
The official request for comments comes only from the National Park
Service, but that's part of the whole ruse of portraying the NPS as the
deciders. They are not. Congress is, which means Virginians must decide
to push our own congressional delegation. Given the enormous power of
the governor in all of that, and in the Fort Monroe Authority, I
included Ms. Suit's e-address.
Mayor Molly Ward of Hampton is a good stand-in: [log in to unmask] My
sense is that Virginia's Democratic senators follow Mayor Ward's lead on
Fort Monroe completely, under the preposterous but strong notion that a
national treasure can belong to a single city. (That's just one of the
fundamental framing notions that our leaders have successfully evaded
actually discussing for six years now.) Mayor Ward also works closely on
Fort Monroe with Ms. Suit, the governor and the Republicans.
