Dear VA-HIST members,
The Library of Virginia's noontime book-talk series continues on
Tuesday, June 27, when Peter R. Henriques will speak on his new book,
Realistic Visionary: A Portrait of George Washington, published by the
University of Virginia Press. Dr. Henriques received his Ph.D. in
History from the University of Virginia in 1971, and he is presently
Professor of History, Emeritus, at George Mason University. He is also
a member of our electronic Virginia history discussion group, as
evidenced by his recent posts.
Realistic Visionary is not a conventional biography but rather a series
of essays on different aspects of Washington's life and thought.
Reviewers have emphasized the author's insight and clarity of prose, and
have especially praised his even-handed articulation of Washington's
views on religion and slavery. Perhaps most important, Henriques
humanizes the first president without diminishing him.
Dr. Henriques's talk will be followed by a book signing sponsored by the
Virginia Shop, where copies of the book are now available.
