Ken and All,

Yes, of course, we all do. I have been reading the Richmond and
Danville newspapers on the web, and the great national disaster
has almost eclipsed local news on their websites.
But one thing that differentiates a civilization from a hunting and
gathering band, is a civilization's ability to do more than one thing
at a time. We fought WW II, but scholarship, art, gardening,
architecture, and even burlesque continued to develop.
Let's keep think about New York and Washington, DC; how can
we not. But let's also talk about colonial land patents, the extent
of gunownership in the early Republic, and Reconstruction in
Virginia. More to the point, let's follow Goethe's advice to
Steppenwolf in Herman Hesse's novel: to remain sane, "keep your
sense of humor."

Harold
