Yeats is certainly right. I can remember a newspaper advertisement for a
fundamentalist church in California printed in the Los Angeles Times. It
showed the pastor under the bold inscription; "Why do they hate us?" I
hadn't a clue who he was or what his church preached. This was in the 1980s
and it seemed strange at the time. The reason for it is now clear. One
side declared the "culture wars," whereas the putative "other side" tended
to be oblivious.
Even more to the point, like many on this list I am NOT a Republican but
have relatives who are Republicans. Some also are devout Christians,
including evangelicals. These people are family, not neighbors or
colleagues. One loves one's family even when differences well up. This
idea that there is a secular (humanist!?) America with no connection with
conservative, capitalist, Christian America is a myth which simply ignores
genealogy. Vice President Dick Cheney is the model here. He has a lesbian
daughter who is pro-gay rights. Have he and his wife disowned her? No!!
Blood is, as I was taught as a child, thicker than water.
